IMPORTANT UPDATE

SBUU reached End-of-Life (EOL) status with the OpenManage 7.4 release which contained SBUU v2.4. SBUU is not supported on 13G PowerEdge servers. Dell recommends customers use Lifecycle Controller for OS Deployments. The SBUU 2.4 release will continue to be available for web download for prior supported servers, and drivers for supported platforms and devices will continue to be available as online downloads and as part of the OpenManage DVD.

Dell strongly recommends using the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) with Lifecycle Controller, which is part of Dell’s embedded management offering on 13th, 12th, and 11th generation PowerEdge servers. The embedded Lifecycle Controller (LC) interface provides server lifecycle management features such as OS deployment, updates, configuration, diagnostics and simplified serviceability of Dell PowerEdge servers.
Using LC can simplify server management— from provisioning, deployment, patching and updating to servicing and user customization by simply pressing F10 at system boot. LC with its dedicated internal storage has been pre-loaded from the factory with drivers for all certified operating systems, LC eliminates the need to download and use SBUU for OS deployment.

The Dell™ Systems Build and Update Utility (SBUU) includes a single tool to enable basic life cycle management of Dell systems:

  • Simple OS Installation (LINUX and WINDOWS) with device drivers
  • Firmware and BIOS Update using (Server Update Utility)
  • Hardware Configuration (BIOS, iDRAC and RAID Configuration)

On Dell servers newer than the 11th generation (11G - released in 2009), the on-board bootable Unified Server Configurator (A component of the Lifecycle Controller) provides similar functionality to SBUU without the need for a CD.
